Tottenham Hotspur 3 – 1 Borussia Dortmund – Kane double puts Spurs 3-1 in front after Dortmund cancelled out Son’s opener for Tottenham tonight, with Dortmund enjoying long, long periods of possession and having two goals disallowed for offside, one of which was an awful decision. Spurs were clinical, despite Dortmund seeing plenty of the ball, you’d probably say Spurs were good value for the win. Harry Kane has now scored 28 goals in his last 22 games for club and country.
Harry Kane scored twice as Tottenham beat Borussia Dortmund to get their Champions League campaign off to a positive start and end their winless run at Wembley.
Kane’s instinct in front of goal was the difference as Spurs were largely forced on the back foot by an impressive German side who dominated territory and possession.
His first goal – a rising angled finish following a determined run down the left – capped a frantic opening 15 minutes in which Son Heung-min’s opener from an angle was cancelled out by a superb curling finish from Dortmund’s Andriy Yarmolenko.
The England forward’s second was a low finish inside the far post on the hour mark to give his side the edge they needed as they overcame the threat of their dangerous and relentless opponent.
However, the home side ended the game with 10 men as defender Jan Vertonghen was sent off for catching Dortmund substitute Mario Gotze with a swinging arm.
The visitors can point an accusing finger at the officials, who ruled out a perfectly good goal from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang for offside.
Tottenham Hotspur 3 – 1 Borussia Dortmund | UEFA Champions League – Match Highlights
- 4′ 1 – 0 Son Heung-min scores when Davinson Sanchez wins the ball as Dortmund look to pass their way into the Spurs box, and his lofted clearance is nodded down into Kane’s path in midfield. He sends a beautifully weighted through ball for Son to chase down the left, and he’s clear through. He checks back as support arrives but then goes onto his left foot out wide, the chance looks like it might have gone for a split second but then Son unleashes a powerful effort past Burki. Spurs are ahead!
- 11′ 1 – 1 Andriy Yarmolenko scores a sensational leveller for Borussia Dortmund. It’s all Dortmund now and Spurs have caved in early on. The ball is worked out wide on the right, and cut back to Yarmolenko on the top-right corner of the area. He shifts the ball onto his left foot and curls a wonderful effort into the far corner of the net, with Lloris left helpless.
15′ 2 – 1 Harry Kane scores an incredible goal for Spurs and they are ahead with an almost identical goal, this time from Harry Kane. He does really well to beat off two challenges to bring a ball down from out of the sky, and then he is away, accelerating away from the Dortmund defence on the left. He looks up and sees Eriksen in support but decides against using him, cutting out onto his left foot and, just like Son earlier, beating Burki at his near post. It looks like a goalkeeping error at first but the replays show that it an astonishingly accurate finish from the Spurs striker.
60′ 3 – 1 Harry Kane takes Spurs 3-1 up when Dembele finds Davies who is well-advanced, he plays a neat lay-off for Eriksen, who then slides Kane in on the left. He takes one touch and then lashes left-footed into the far corner.
90+2′ 3 – 1 [Red Card] Jan Vertonghen is dismissed off the pitch on receiving his second yellow card he goes off for Tottenham Hotspur because of a bad foul.
